How to Forgive

How do I forgive? More specifically:  How do I forgive the unforgivable?

How do I Forgive?

I believe this is a universal question many of us struggle with. What about you?

I recently had the opportunity to participate in a Forgiveness Global TeleSummit hosted by Nancy Battye with 33 other speakers (click here for the details). The panel and listeners brought up a number of great questions and personal experiences I thought I would share with you.

Here are some highlights to help you heal and forgive.

Forgiveness is in the Will, not in the Feeling

Many people get stuck on being able to forgive because they mistakingly define forgiveness as an emotion instead of an action.

Forgiveness is NOT a feeling. Feelings are nice, and eventually the hope to be free from the emotional negative charge of what you have forgiven, is certainly a worthwhile byproduct of having forgiven. But.. it is not the first step in the process of forgiveness. The very first step is in your free will to make a choice to forgive.

So what do I have to do to forgive using my free will?

You have forgiven if you:

1.Wish no ill will or harm to the person who has treated you unjustly.

2.You pray or send englightenment to the person you are trying to forgive to change for the better – because their soul needs more help than yours.

3.Leave it to God or your Higher Power to resolve the issue in a manner of divine justice for the good of all involved.

Forgiveness is not your idea of making the wrong right, but allowing God to make the wrong right.

Self Forgiveness

Your ability to forgive someone else is a direct reflection of how much you are able to forgive yourself.

Consider the following scenario…

A perfect stranger in the street yells out your are stupid and ugly – how do you react? Probably without much emotion considering the source.

Now imagine the person you love most saying the exact same words to you. How do you feel now? Probably much different from the first scenario.

The words were exactly the same – but your emotional response was completely different. The only deduction you can logically make is that it is more than the words which matter to you. It is not what is said – but the source of your emotional connection to the person who speaks to you, what their relationships means to you, what trigger they push in you from your past., and how you view yourself.

Salt only hurts when it hits an open wound. The fact you are in pain proves there is wound open which you need to heal.

When in Pain, Focus on:

1. What is the gut reaction teaching me? What do I need to learn about myself?

2. What is the wound I need to heal?

3. Be grateful for the gift of discovering the real issue and the opportunity to finally heal, so you can be emotionally free from it.

Don’t Obsess

Over thinking the problem, pain and past event does nothing except hurt you again.

If you don’t let go of this negativity, you must ask yourself these two questions:
“Why do I want to keep myself marinated in this poison of self destruction?”
Why do I not love myself enough to stop staying in the pain?”

Give up the hope of a better past.  Focus your precious energy on what you can control and change for the better.

Forgiveness begins with forgiving yourself. Trusting God more, and depending on yourself less. Listening to the whispers and warning signs God may be giving you in the silence of your prayer, or through other people.

Forgiveness is a process

You don’t put an acorn seed in the ground and expect a full grown 20 foot acorn tree to be looking back at you 20 minutes later! Why would you expect this unreasonable result from yourself?

Be patient with yourself, and focus on the size of your God and the great progress you have made. Not the size of your problem or how far you think you have to go.

“He who does not forgive digs two graves.” Chinese Proverb

Positive & Negative People – Are You Good Garnish?

Gotta’ love it!

That little jazz-of-pizzazz which delights the dish, sparkles the eyes with a surprise, and magnifies the meal in a moment. Yes, good garnish makes any ordinary dish extraordinarily spectacular in every possible way!

Good Garnish Makes the Dish!

Garnish - defined by Websters Dictionary is “to decorate (food) with something that adds color or flavor.”

This past week I was doing a radio show with host of the “Hatched Egg”, Amy Furbee, and we were talking about the issue of becoming who we associate with. Surrounding yourself with positive or negative people, definitely has an effect on YOU, whether you want it to or not.

Stand next to perfume or manure long enough,
and guess how you’ll soon be smelling?!

Suddenly, Amy interjected,

“It’s like my husband and I always say – Is that person Good Garnish?”

Are YOU Good Garnish?

WOW! I love that analogy – because it resonates truth beyond compare.

The people you chose to associate with, are either good garnish in a true blue right side up world, or distasteful wilted garnish in a green sky upside down world. You must decide what you will allow by your side.

A little bit of garnish, possess a powerful impact on what the whole plate looks like. Think about how just a little piece of something, makes such an enormous difference on the larger portion. Doesn’t the concept make you pause and reflect?

Next time you feel agitated around someone, or perhaps just a little confused, ask yourself, “Is this person”Good Garnish”in my life?”

You may decide you need a different ornament decorating your sustenance. If you’re plate is already full, adding even the smallest sour flavor could be a major killer tipping point which destroys your whole meal.

Who is Good or Bad garnish in your life today? Are you Good Garnish for the people you meet?

You are what you eat. Bon appetite… and Cheers!

Bon Appetite & Cheers!

GFMG Your Way to Happiness!

(As seen in Power Women Magazine; by Deb Scott)

I have often said there needs to be a 12 step program for everyone.

A way to live with more self-awareness, detachment, acceptance and peace. A place of resourceful strength able to effectively kill those negative liar voices, the ones who seek to steal the precious positive real estate in your head.

Join the Party!

How and why do the 12 step programs help achieve your happy dream?

Imagine the steps are more simply broken down into four quadrants, or four pieces in a larger pie, or strong spokes in a wheel.

>The first set of 3 steps are about; Giving up
>The second set of 3 steps are about; Fessing up
>The third set of 3 steps are about; Making up
>The last set of 3 are about; Growing up

When we give up control of any situation, we are open to consider things we don’t know.

Once we are open to new ideas, we can see our part in any given circumstance, and focus on the only thing we have any control over anyway, and that would be us.

Once we are open and aware, we naturally want to heal any wounds by making up with the gift of forgiveness. Forgiving ourselves, and the other person, whether they deserve it or not.

Eventually, the process naturally helps us grow up and live life, on life’s terms. We stop the never-ending battle of wishing things were different, and accept things are what they are, grateful we did the best we could at the time with the information we had.

Gratitude for having learned valuable wisdom for the present moment and unwritten future.

It’s all a process.

The 12 Steps:

1. We admitted we were powerless over (insert your problem) —that our lives had become unmanageable.

2. Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood him.

4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

6. We’re entirely ready to have God remove our shortcomings.

7. Humbly asked him to remove our shortcomings.

8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood him, praying only for knowledge of his will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to others, and to practice these principles in all of our affairs.

Trees don’t grow twenty feet overnight, and neither does anything in the diamond of a person known as “you.”

GFMG is a winning equation you can always use to never lose!

PRAYER: Powerful Real Answers You Enjoy Regularly!

PRAYER: Powerful Real Answers You Enjoy Regularly!

So many people tell me, “Well Deb, I’ve tried everything else to solve this problem, I guess I should try to pray now.”

This is exactly the upside down thinking I’m talking about getting rid of!

Prayer From The Heart ;)

Prayer should not be the last resort, it should be the very first thing you do before anything else!

Ok – so you don’t understand how prayer works.

Well, you don’t understand how your television works, but you still channel surf on that. You don’t understand how your computer works, but you’re on the Internet right now, and not boycotting using that. And, you can’t build a car, but you have no problem getting into yours so you can arrive at your desired destination.  Am I right?

Do you see how hypocritical we can be when it comes to prayer? [Read more…]

Green Sky to True Blue Happy!

What Do These Happy People Have In Common?

What do authors like Dr. Wayne Dyer, Joel Osteen, Cheryl Richardson, and Mother Angelica have in common?

They all know the secret how to turn a Green Sky to True Blue!

Can you?

Be Happy in 2010!

With the New Year fast approaching, we all have goals. One of the most popular desires is to be happy, from the inside out. A safe place where no one can steal your joy.

The paradox of how to attain happiness, is a secondary gain of just doing the next right thing, having the next right thought, taking the next right action.

So why isn’t everyone in the world happy in life?

The secret, which is really no secret is all, is that they stuck to what they believed in their heart to be true, regardless of what other people told them was true. They did not let their happiness come from other people’s minds, and neither do you.

Think of forgiveness. Is forgiveness a feeling or an action? If you think forgiveness is a feeling, you are living inside a deep suffocating green sky. Forgiveness is in the action. If you do not wish someone ill, pray they will be enlightened to a higher level of connected purpose, and are not attached to revenge or being “right,” you have indeed already forgiven. Don’t be concerned with the results.

People often say that volunteering is something they do to help someone else. The great paradox is that volunteering most assuredly helps someone – namely YOU. When you volunteer you have to give away something without expecting anything in return. The motivation behind your volunteering is what gives you more than you receive. Like a fragrant perfume that is sprayed on another person, if you are standing next to them, some of the splendor must fall upon you too. Giving away by volunteering immerses you in the gift first.

You may perceive an event is bad in the present moment, but if you are reading this, you are not dead. If you are not dead, you are not finished yet. You do not know what you do not know. This tragedy and set back, could actually be a genuine set up for your greatest comeback!

Think of past events that you thought were devastating, for which you are now grateful. “Thank God for unanswered prayers,” as the song goes. The same can be true for you in the present moment. Do not believe the lie that all things are not working out for the best for you, exactly as they should be. Don’t give up five minutes before the miracle!

Prayer is one of the greatest free gifts we can all utilize to get answers. Think of Prayer as; Peaceful Real Answers You Enjoy Regularly, and ask you Higher Power, God, whatever you can accept in this very moment, to guide you to learn what you need to understand to transform your obstacles into opportunities to help you achieve your dreams.

Nothing is ever wasted in a green sky turned blue.

What can you transform in the coming year to make it the best year ever?

A Social Network That Helps You To Be Happy.

social-network-jasons-networkSocial networks appear to be all the rage today. But, is there a social network that can help you to be happy?  YES! By accident I discovered Jason’s Network,  a social networking site developed by Jason McElhone. This site is a hidden jewel where people are committed to sharing their unique time, treasure, and talents, to help you become happier; while making the world a better place for everyone.

Turning Your World Right Side Up

The only thing in your life that should be upside down is your strawberry shortcake!

The irony of turning upside down, right side up, continues Why? Imagine, your computer has been down all week and when you finally start to catch up on all your email’s, BAM! Suddenly you are made aware something good has happened as you start reading messages wishing you – Congratulations! Congratulations for what? [Read more…]

FORGIVENESS – Feeling or Action?

For a long time I struggled with being able to forgive. Maybe you have felt the same way?  How do you really forgive?

In my “green sky” upside down thinking, I always thought forgiveness had to be a feeling. Something that made ME feel better inside towards the person I was trying to forgive. A futile effort that never seemed to grab the core of my heart.

Forgiveness is Freeing!

What I have learned in my new right side up, “blue sky” world, is that forgiveness is an ACTION word.

If forgiveness was a feeling, you might as well take [Read more…]
