7 Sensational Gifts to Growing Ageless

I saw a great quote the other day, it read; “we don’t say trees are getting older, we say trees are growing.” I think it’s a good time for people to adopt the same mantra about themselves!

aging tree

What is age, anyway? Truth be told, I have never met anyone who really looked their age. People are either much older or younger than what I view them to be. I have come to accept age has nothing to do with maturity, and growth doesn’t have much to do with age.

What I have learned at this particular point in my life, is that there are common characteristics of people who seem to transcend time in a most happy and healthy way. These stellar individuals easily and authentically relate to a variety of people of many ages, colors or creeds. Men and women who help bring out the best in others’, inevitably bring about the best version of themselves in the process.

1. They are not motivated by what other people think.

When you care less about what other people’s opinion of you happens to be on any given day, there’s a lot more freeing energy available to discover and be your most authentic self.

2. They aren’t attached to results.

Motivation is a great indicator of spiritual maturity. Ageless souls are less concerned about attaining a specific result and more focused about doing the right thing for the right reason.

3. They forgive themselves and others more quickly.

Perhaps it’s a dose of reality or a piece of humble pie which helps ageless people forgive themselves and others more quickly, but letting go of resentments and regrets seems to go hand in hand.

4. They have Faith in a Divine Creator and Plan.

Regardless of any specific religious label or belief system, ageless people stay strong by knowing there is always a bigger picture connecting the small details of any given day. The all about “me” show is rapidly replaced with how “we” can help each other.

5. They are lifelong learners.

Ageless people are always learning something new, and admitting no matter how much they know, it’s never nearly enough.

6. They have a great sense of Humor.

Being able to laugh at oneself with someone else is a great therapy to staying young. Finding the irony in life, exercises the spirit in ways no drug could ever induce.

7. They spend a lot of time with children, old people and animals.

Perhaps it’s the smile of a small child which reminds us how we all started out with nothing, or the conversation with a grand-parent which forces us to accept we won’t leave with anything either, or that none of it even matters as experienced in the precious relationships we have with our pets. Whatever the reason, spending time with the very young, the very old, and animals in between, promises to put a little miracle grow in your life.

Aging is a privilege many don’t have the luxury of enjoying today.

When you replace judgement with gratitude, you will automatically view every age as a stage of grace which never competes with itself.

It’s all good.

A Terrific Turn-Key Transformation Tip to Lighten any Trouble

That feeling of being overwhelmed and exhausted, saturated with suffocation by a problem you don’t think has any solution can be completely paralyzing. Anger, fear and resentment arrive wrapped in a bow of confusion like the plague without warning. “Do I really have to deal with this right now?”

Pending the discovery of a silver bullet which I have never known to exist for anyone, I think you’ll find this little exercise a quick fun fix to turn around any sorrowful perspective into a dazzling vision of hope and joy.

“When the time to perform arrives, the time to prepare has past”.

I recently interviewed the founder of Mariposa Magazine, Emily Hahn, and loved her cure for the “stinking thinking” disease we can all occasionally face. I call this type of action “successful sabotage” because you are setting yourself up for success in advance of encountering any inevitable obstacle. Consider it an insurance policy to protect your heart from despair.

Acceptance is imperative. Why? Because understanding you will face people, places and events which can get you a little down now and then, is the foundation of all true freedom. It’s OK. Don’t worry. It happens to everyone. The brilliance is not in avoiding feelings of pain, but to make sure those hurtful feelings don’t become your final destination. Good to begin well, better to end well.

Emily had a really rough childhood as an immigrant to the United States, from language barriers to family dysfunction. She had a tough marriage which ended up in divorce, and difficulty finding financing to complete her education while raising her children alone. It wasn’t easy to pick herself up and go on, but she did. (Listen to her story – click here).

During that time of discouragement, she unexpectedly found a job as a waitress, which she very much enjoyed because she loved meeting and serving a variety of new people. The money she earned afforded her the opportunity to complete her college degree, which she then used as a spring board to become a top sales manager at a fortune 500 company.

One day, driving through town, she found herself reflecting on her earlier struggles and how drastically different her life had become (for the better). She was deeply grateful, thanking God to be on the other side of her most horrific pain, when she suddenly recognized the old restaurant. How could she have ever known?

Emily thought how wonderful it would be if she could forever capture that pure moment of peace, success and appreciation. Wouldn’t it be amazing if she could bottle that positive energy for safe keeping to recycle on a rainy day? She wanted to wrap herself in that blanket of joy and happiness to never forget.

It was in that moment that she had the idea. Compelled by a strong inspiration, she entered her old establishment to purchase an apron like the one she had worn for so many long hours in days gone by. She wanted to touch that piece of her history that gave her the opportunity to turn her life around.

What happened next was equally as unexpected. She went to her local frame store and had that apron mounted on all four sides like a badge of honor. It was her certificate of authenticity, proof she could live life on life’s terms, validation that dreams really can come true.

Today, that framed apron proudly perches in her office as a constant reminder that the bend in the road doesn’t have to be the end of the road. She did it once; she can do it again and again and again after that. Her disappoints in life were spiritually transformed into a vehicle of delight. Anything is possible with a little hope, faith, trust and true grit.

Emily's Framed Apron

Emily Hahn didn’t discover an antibiotic to eliminate problems from everyday living, but she most assuredly learned how to inject optimism into every moment of the days she is yet to live.

Like the caterpillar into the butterfly, we often don’t see the most beautiful change is happening deep inside our struggle, which births the strength to give us our wings to fly.

Goal Setting – 3 Simple Steps to Becoming Your Absolute Best!

As seen in Best Ever YOU! Magazine

Make it Happen!

Okay, who doesn’t want to be their best? I mean really, anyone who wants to be truly happy, understands reaching your full potential is a prerequisite to being your BEST EVER YOU! Being your best naturally includes striving for excellence, living your passion, and achieving your personal goals.

What will accomplishing your goals do for you?

1. Increase your self-esteem.
2. Inspire daily living.
3. Make a difference in the world.

Setting goals is to be your very best, is the most unselfish act you could ever do. Why? Because when you are at your best, you are more likely to be an effective instrument to help others be their very best too.

3 Simple Steps to Achieving Your Goals

1. Create a Goal Mission Statement
Define your goal – and WHY you want to make it happen.

If you don’t know where you want to go, then it won’t matter what you do. You must have a clearly written goal complimented by the benefits resulting from achieving the goal.

“I want more more money,” is a goal, but not one you are sure to stay motivated in achieving if you don’t have the passion to power the momentum on a daily basis. Having more money is usually a byproduct of something else you are striving to accomplish.

“I want more money so I can do more marketing in my business to reach more people to inspire them to start theirs,” is a clearly defined goal with a mission statement.

Write down yours…

Write it Down - Make it Happen

2. Visualize the Experience
How do you feel – Create the experience of achieving your goal.

Studies show your mind can’t tell the difference between a real experience and the one you imagine. It is critical you experience in your body, the feeling of achieving your dream in order to keep you focused in attaining the desired result.

New actions are inspired by the new feelings you want to experience. These new feelings are a result of new thoughts. You need to connect your goal to a feeling which is real for you. A specific tangible result.

Engaging all your 5 senses is a game changer. How do you feel? What do you see? What do you hear? Identify what is happening around you when you achieve the benefit of your goal.

In the example given above, this might look like, “A new client is approaching me in a sold out seminar event, enthusiastically thanking me for helping her move from fear to faith and start her own business.” Wow! I feel lighter than air!

Now your turn..

Alive in Your Mind

3. Sabotage Yourself for Success
Surround yourself daily with people, resources, and images which Inspire.

Consider this mind vitamin therapy to feed your whole soul. You must have discipline to take your positive energy, to remain empowered to follow your goal to completion.

Organizing your day to help you build your success in every way,is what this step is all about. Place pictures, affirmations, quotes, or any item which consistently ignites a feelingof excitement towards achieving your goal, in places your will inevitably visit throughout your day. A bathroom mirror when brushing your teeth in the morning, your car going to work, your computer, or even by your coffee pot. Wherever you know you will be going, or whatever you will be doing, is the perfect place for your successful sabotage reminder.

In the example we’ve been using, this might look like taking a magazine picture which reminds you of how it will feel to hear someone come up to you and tell you that you changed their life. It might be your favorite quote taped to your fridge which states, “If we don not change our direction, we are likely to end up where we are headed.”

What is your successful sabotage tool(s) and where will you place it(them)?

Self Improvement – How to make Change Permanent

Do you want to be your best?

Oh yea!

In a recent poll most people agreed being your best is a top priority. The real question appeared to be, “How do I make the necessary changes to achieve my very best?”

It may be easier for you to make changes in your behavior, if you understand how your brain changes when you perform a new task.

Your Brain is Alive

” The changes that occur in the brain when learning or performing something new can be explained by neuroplasticity or brain plasticity.”

Study Your Mind

“In the late 1960s and early 1970s, neuroscientists started making unexpected discoveries about the previously considered unchanging brain. They found that the brain can change its function and structure when it performed different activities — it “perfected” its neurological circuits until it was better able to handle the task at hand. Neuroscientists started calling this fundamental brain property, “brain plasticity” or “neuroplasticity.”

Break Bad Habits

Now you can have hope to break bad habits permanently and with the success you desire to live the happy life you deserve!

Repeated actions of the new behavior, and subsequently the good feelings associated with them, will become rooted in the fabric of who you are with each action you implement.  Learning and practicing will actually “change” your brain function, transforming bad habits into good.

Rewiring Your Brain for Change

Focusing on setting yourself up for success is imperative.  You must “successfully sabotage” yourself to guarantee you will do the actions required to rewire your brain.

Norman Doidge, MD, a psychiatrist and researcher, has investigated neuroplasticity in detail.  His case histories detailastonishing progress of people whose conditions had long been dismissed as hopeless. We see a woman born with half a brain that rewired itself to work as a whole, a woman labeled retarded who cured her deficits with brain exercises, learning disorders cured, IQs raised, aging brains rejuvenated, and entrenched depression and anxiety disappearing.”

Premeditated Success

The key to unlock the door into your new best life rests in your dedication to repeat the new behavior with enthusiastic tenacity.  Setting yourself up with a premeditated plan to execute the new behavior, even when you don’t feel like doing it, is a powerful tool you can use.

Start Now!

Here are 3 Do’s for You

D efine
What is it you want to achieve?  What bad habit do you want to eliminate?  What new feeling do you want to experience?

D ream
Visualize your new life experiencing your new feelings and behavior.  What does it look like?  Who are you with?  What are you doing?  Where are you doing it?  What is your impact on others?  How do you feel?

D ecide
Now that you have defined the new behavior and feeling changes you want to enjoy, and the experience you have visualized these new changes will produce, you need to decide to accept them.  You need to embrace your new reality.  You must decide to set yourself up for success with a fail-safe action plan that is result oriented.  Practice “successful sabotage.”

Don’t let your happiness come from other peoples mind.  Tranform the structure of your brain to function at its very best.  Begin now.  You’re worth the effort!

Detox Your Mind!

Detox Your Mind – Why and How Now

You may have heard of Recovery Rehabilitation Centers to detoxify your body from addictive drugs, or Medical Centers which provide everything from colon to kidney cleanses for your body, but have you considered the possibility of priceless benefits by detoxifying your mind of negative thoughts?Yes! It’s possible for you to do! Read on how…

Your Mind is Alive!

Negative thoughts are alive. You may not be able to touch them in a boxed package, but each one generates an electrical impulse which develops an imprint in your mind which produces an emotion. These emotions either make you feel happy, or unhappy. It’s a simple as that.

You many not be able to control when negative thoughts enter your brain, but you absolutely have the power to open the door and invite them in to stay, or shut the door and tell them good riddance goodbye.

Like any illness, when diagnosed early, recovery of a good prognosis statistically increases. The same is true for you to feel better. Dump the junk of negative thoughts as soon as they sweep your mind, and block the negative feelings that come with them. How?

Take Positive Mind Vitamins Daily

The most effective way to get rid of a negative thought is to acknowledge it exists.Face it head on. It may seem upside down and un-natural that in order to remove the thought, you must literally embrace it, but nothing could be more right side up true!

You’re only as sick as your secrets, and bringing the thought into the light of awareness is like taking a vicious vampire into the power of the sun,
automatically burns the evil away in the brightness of the day.

Dr. Carolyn Leaf has done extensive scientific research on the physical changes toxic thoughts create in your body. “The chemicals that accompany those toxic thoughts course through your body in a myriad of toxic chain reactions. These toxic thoughts can even look distorted compared to healthy thoughts – chemicals released can change the shape and even destroy part of the neurons, causing change right down to the cellular level.” Imagine that, right down to your cellar level!

->Thoughts -> <-Feelings -> <-Behavior<-

The most effective way to detoxify your mind is to embrace your negative thought,
and let it go as fast as you can.

Remember, your feelings aren’t facts, so be sure to challenge each one. Critique how much power you give each thought. Is it a truth, illusion, or just a habit you have formed based on prior experiences?

Replace and transform old norms with
new dreams you seek to achieve.

Surround yourself in positive transformation tools. Seek out the people, places, and things which help you grow a strong healthy mind, able to withstand the storms of negative winds.

Take your positive mind vitamins daily. Detoxify your thoughts and cleanse the fear. Dare to Discover the Amazing Happy YOU!

Terrific Teens – The Best People We Know Club!

You may have heard the phrase, “out of the mouth of babes,” but you may never have considered learning life lessons from teens.  This blog post could provide a surprise which opens your mind.

Terrific Teens Team!

I recently completed a full week of volunteer teaching summer catechism (i.e. better known as Sunday school) for eighth graders at my parish in Newburyport, Massachusetts. This was a super concentrated program, from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm daily.  Quite a demanding commitment for most adults, these young  people rose to the occasion with an attitude of openness, enthusiasm, and respect.

These terrific teens became positive energy transformation machines!

Each student enjoyed contributing their own personal brand of authenticity into each project and presentation.  Creating posters, coordinating skits, organizing events, each teen expressed themselves with healthy humility and charisma.  A delicate balance of integrity many adults have sadly forgotten to represent.

Our Future & Hope

Picture Perfect Pizza.

At the end of the week, the group yearned for pizza.  How could you say no to those sparkling eyes and miles of smiles?!

When one of the group went out to place the order (everyone has a cell phone at thirteen these days), the returning response included, “Deb, we were short $15.00 for the order, but the pizza lady said not to worry about it, and she’s going to deliver it to us anyway!”

Shocked, I had to smile myself.  It was clear the pizza lady responded with the non-conventional generosity of spirit the students expressed to her.  Do we give more than we receive?

Screaming with excitement and gratitude to have all five pizzas confirmed in the order, the group quickly applied the lessons they had learned.  Love is an action word, and what would appreciation for pizza look like?

A huge hand made poster board thank you card of course!  Complete with pictures, comments, signatures, and a “Deb’s Awesome Class, INC” manufacturing logo.  A human symphony orchestrated with  fun and flair everywhere!

Give what You have to Give-Gratitude

A surprise for the eyes, a gift for the soul, a lesson in love, from heaven above.

Pet Power: Reduce Stress & Increase Happiness

The mutual admiration society stress busters never looked so good!

Pet Power!

Beijo and Zu-Zu are the antidote to any anxiety problem just by being alive. Do you have a Beijo and Zu-Zu in your life? Maybe you need to find one.

These two faithful friends consistently help me beat unwanted stress by:

1. Making me laugh when I may want to cry.
2. Helping me appreciate the present moment.
3. Motivating me to get my exercise by giving them theirs.
4. Reflect on the gift of simplicity.
5. Focus on enjoying being vs. doing.
6. Smile often and feel happy.

Stress and peace can’t occupy the same space at the same time, any more than you can bring darkness into the light.

It is impossible to have one, without eliminating the other. “Stay in the light, and you’ll never have to be afraid of the dark.”

It's All Good

Beijo and Zu-Zu are like a fragrant perfume spraying “All Things Good” 24/7. They reduce stress because they increase joy. Unlike people, these two don’t restrain their excitement, or fear expressing their innermost feelings to me. They are not restricted by other people’s perception, or intimidated by social etiquette. Their motivation is completely transparent. What you see, is what you get! How refreshing.

Proud Member of Pet Power Club!

They always help me leave my stress at the door, with their over exuberating jubilee welcome home wag dance. Was I gone for a lifetime? These two have no inhibitions in expressing how elated they are to have me back home.

Yes, my four legged friends can frequently reduce stress more effectively than a lot of people I know, and there are studies to back up the claim.

Clinical research done by William A. Banks, M.D., professor of geriatrics in the department of internal medicine and professor of pharmacological and physiological sciences at Saint Louis University School of Medicine showed, “Nursing home residents felt much less lonely after spending time alone with a dog than they did when they visited with a dog and other people.” ( Anthrozoos 18(4) 3/2006). Wow!

Another study by Karen Allen, Ph.D., of the State University of New York at Buffalo, writing in the journal of Psychosomatic Medicine, found that, “Compared with human support, the presence of pets was associated with lower perceived and actual responses to stress. While the idea of a pet as social support may appear to some as a peculiar notion, our participants’ responses to stress, combined with their descriptions of the meaning of pets in their lives, suggest to us that social support can indeed cross species.” Pets can often do what people can’t!

God & the Dog!

Faithful companions, neither Beijo nor Zu-Zu ever criticize me, reveal my deepest secrets, or reject my quality of love.   Loyal friends who speak in a snuggle, wag of a tail, or kiss with their licks. This brand of unconditional love grows only peace and acceptance.

Pet power can beat your stress!  God and the Dogs – man’s best friend!

Pets are Heaven Sent Gifts of Love

The Scorpion Story – Are YOU Being Stung?

Are YOU being Stung?

I was speaking with a friend earlier today..

She was talking about the challenge of letting go of an unhealthy relationship in her life. A man she was contemplating have a long term relationship with. Sound familiar?

Despite the fact she had gotten “stung” by this guy in the past, she hesitated whether she should give him “one more chance.” Sound familiar?

“But he says this time will be different.” “But he says he recognizes the things he did in the past were not right.” “But he says he is going to change.” Sound familiar?

We have all been “stung” by people we opened our hearts to. People we thought really loved and cared about us. Yes, we have all been betrayed..

The question I think we must pose is this:
“Do I want to risk the pain of being let down
(AGAIN!)
because of my expectation of
what I WANT to be true VS what I KNOW to be true based on the ACTION FACTS.”

The Scorpion Story:

“There was a rabbit and a scorpion who wanted to get to the other side of the river. The scorpion told the rabbit, “Get on my back and I will carry you to safety to the other side of the river.” But the rabbit replied, “You are a scorpion, and I know you will sting me and kill me.” “Surely not.” replied the scorpion. “I have changed, and I too want to cross the river.”

So the rabbit believed what the scorpion said, and jumped on his back to cross the river.

One third across, safe. Half way across, safe. To the other side of the river, safe. The rabbit apologized to the scorpion he ever doubted the new revelation of conversion the scorpion expressed.

Suddenly, the scorpion stung and injected enough poison into the rabbit to kill it.

The rabbit replied in dismay, “Why did you sting to kill to me, we were safe on the other side of the river?”

The scorpion replied, “Because it’s in my nature. Why were you ever so foolish to believe otherwise.”

Don't Be Naive!

Yes, sometimes the people we meet who continue to hurt us just can’t, or won’t help themselves.

The question we need to ask is,
“Why do you trust the lie when you already have evidence of the truth?”

Pruning hurts, but we must cut away the dead branches to grow fully alive. We must give up the little bit of good, for great. We must accept people where they are, and give up the illusion of control we have to change them.

  • Who in your life is a scorpion?
  • Who in your life continues to sting you with poison regardless of the words they speak otherwise? You can only judge by the ACTIONS, because words are meaningless.

Another person may indeed have a serious problem. But if you continue to engage in these problems, YOU have a problem too!

Let go of the people who sting you in life, and watch the healing flow into your life.

Only when you are genuinely willing to let go, will you get the best you deserve.

You attract who you are. Keep the focus on yourself.

You’re worth the effort!

You're so Worth the Effort!

Start Where You’re Standing

(As seen in All Books Review International; Inspiration)

How many times have you said to yourself, “I’m going to do that when —- happens.” “I’ll be able to do that when I have —– amount of money.” “As soon as I finish —– I’ll start to do ——.”

Start Now!

What you probably don’t hear yourself saying is, “If I wait another day to begin my dream of ——, I may not have the good health, family support, and/or love of friends which I now I enjoy, to enable me to accomplish ———. I must not delay another day!”

Do you see the difference?

They key factor in getting your dreams, your goals accomplished, is starting in some way, large or small, right now where you stand. You must begin by beginning.

The goal you can control is to create motion in this moment. Make tangible the thoughts you envision, and your actions will provide all the momentum you need to give your inspirations life.

Here are six simple success tips, you can do right now where you stand.:

1. Write down your dream / goal.
2. List three steps you will need to complete to achieve this dream/goal.
3. Identify a mentor who has already accomplished this goal, or something similar to your goal.
4, Listen to one radio interview, or read one ezine with this mentor.
5. Make one phone call, or send one email/letter to accomplish one step in point #2.
6. Keep repeating.

You can literally do all six of these steps in under one hour, and never leave your house!

Your Feet are Your Friends to the End!

None of us is promised tomorrow. Don’t risk the opportunity to taste your delight today. The time is now.

Surrender your illusion “—-” is required to begin. Accepting you must start where you are already standing, is the very first step towards touching your dream in this moment.

Your feet are your faithful friends to the end!

Happy Birthday America!

Here we are, Fourth of July weekend 2010, another year older, the birthday of our country.

Happy Birthday America!

Like any annual birthday celebration, we join with special loved ones to share laughter and smiles. This is a magical gift, a truly unique life.

How do you express gratitude and appreciation for the irreplaceable person of mother, daughter, father, or friend? What thoughtful gift do you joyfully wrap and bring to the party?

The Birthday of America is no different.

A day set apart for you and me, to reflect and respect the gracious privilege to have experienced another year with her – The United States of America. Faithful to needs, desires, and dreams come true.

What tangible offering have you brought her? How much time did you take to find that special something which clearly reflects your deepest appreciation to know her? Are you a better person for having met her? Is she better for having met you?

America is beautiful because she gives me the opportunity to be the best person I was created to be. Under God, in the Land of the Free, one nation, one family, committed to lead.

Together I trust we can still pray enthusiastically for these.

Some would say they never truly appreciated something until it was gone. You may have felt the same when someone you loved passed from this life to the next. What more could you have done or said?

In God We Trust

America is a one-of-a-kind treasure, to be cherished, protected, respected and adored. This country is too brilliant and beautiful for anyone to ignore. She is a star for all to see, from sea to shinning sea.

This July 4th birthday, let’s not take her for granted. Let’s think of the gift we are bringing to her, to help her become the best she was created by our founding fathers to be.

FOR, BY and OF the PEOPLE

This fourth of July, remember the many who came to live free or die for her. Those who gave up anything, to make sure you had everything.

Love is an action word worthy of your effort.

America the beautiful, dressed in dazzling red, white, and blue. Help me firmly protect, the lives still yet, who dream to express, “America the Beautiful – I too, love you.”

Happy Birthday America!

God Bless & Protect Our Troops

Positive & Negative People – Are You Good Garnish?

Gotta’ love it!

That little jazz-of-pizzazz which delights the dish, sparkles the eyes with a surprise, and magnifies the meal in a moment. Yes, good garnish makes any ordinary dish extraordinarily spectacular in every possible way!

Good Garnish Makes the Dish!

Garnish - defined by Websters Dictionary is “to decorate (food) with something that adds color or flavor.”

This past week I was doing a radio show with host of the “Hatched Egg”, Amy Furbee, and we were talking about the issue of becoming who we associate with. Surrounding yourself with positive or negative people, definitely has an effect on YOU, whether you want it to or not.

Stand next to perfume or manure long enough,
and guess how you’ll soon be smelling?!

Suddenly, Amy interjected,

“It’s like my husband and I always say – Is that person Good Garnish?”

Are YOU Good Garnish?

WOW! I love that analogy – because it resonates truth beyond compare.

The people you chose to associate with, are either good garnish in a true blue right side up world, or distasteful wilted garnish in a green sky upside down world. You must decide what you will allow by your side.

A little bit of garnish, possess a powerful impact on what the whole plate looks like. Think about how just a little piece of something, makes such an enormous difference on the larger portion. Doesn’t the concept make you pause and reflect?

Next time you feel agitated around someone, or perhaps just a little confused, ask yourself, “Is this person”Good Garnish”in my life?”

You may decide you need a different ornament decorating your sustenance. If you’re plate is already full, adding even the smallest sour flavor could be a major killer tipping point which destroys your whole meal.

Who is Good or Bad garnish in your life today? Are you Good Garnish for the people you meet?

You are what you eat. Bon appetite… and Cheers!

Bon Appetite & Cheers!
